Counselling helps individuals to navigate or resolve a broad range of life experiences; including problematic thoughts, feelings, relationships, or averse events. It is not unusual for someone to experience challenges that would benefit from professional counselling support. What types of therapy do you counsellors provide? Our Counsellors and Psychologists are trained in many forms of therapy. Here are a few: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR); Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Critical Incident Stress Debriefing; Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT); Dialectical behavior Therapy (DBT); Art Therapy; Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) What happens in a typical counselling session? A typical counselling session is 50-60 minutes in length. Sessions include elements of assessment (often in the form of questions and discussion), relational support, and the implementation of strategies designed to support the client (this can be done during or in between counselling sessions). During the first session, the client can expect some discussion regarding the nature of the counselling relationship, exploration of the client’s presenting concerns, and collaborative goal-setting. What is EMDR and how is it used in counselling? EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a procedure used to reduce the impact of past upsetting experiences that affect a person’s day-to-day life. It has been used to help people with trauma, nightmares, anxiety, panic, low self-esteem and prolonged grief. EMDR typically begins with grounding and calming skills and exercises. When the therapist begins working with you to process the memories, he or she will typically involve both sides of the body, usually through side-to-side eye movements or taps to each side of the body, and she or he will periodically pause and ask what you noticed.
