From Bean to Cup: Rescuing Cyesha Coffee and Building a Sustainable Future | |
Cyesha Coffee Ltd is a private company registered with the Rwanda Development Board under Reg No. 107639539 and was established in 2018. The company emanated from Gerard Trading Company, which was established in 2015. Gerard Trading Company used to buy coffee cherries, process them in the Mugeyo Coffee Washing Station, and sell fully washed coffee to national and international markets https://naeb.gov.rw/index.php?id=79. For about 3 years, the owners of the company noticed super-extra competitions for insufficient cherries in its zone and low productivity of old coffee trees. Further, it was noticed that coffee farmers spend significant energy without gaining what they spend. Thus, it was decided to establish Cyesha Coffee Ltd. in order to be an excellent coffee production hub whose primary intent is to produce the highest quality of coffee and support its catchment community and country to achieve sustainable development. The company began by cultivating 93,000 coffee trees on its 20-hectare plantation, located in the ideal coffee-growing region of Nyamasheke district. This strategic location provides the perfect combination of high altitude, volcanic soil, and abundant rainfall, resulting in superior quality coffee beans. Cyesha Coffee specializes in cultivating Arabica bourbon and RAB C15 coffee varieties, known for their exceptional cup quality https://www.instagram.com/cyeshacoffee/. Beyond producing exceptional coffee, Cyesha Coffee is deeply committed to supporting its community and promoting sustainable development. Facing Challenges and Embracing Opportunities To expand its impact and meet the growing demand for high-quality Rwandan coffee, Cyesha Coffee secured a loan to increase its plantation to 75 hectares. While this expansion promises future growth, it has created a temporary financial hurdle as the new coffee trees won't yield beans until 2025. To overcome this challenge and continue its mission, Cyesha Coffee is seeking to raise $500,000. These funds will be primarily used for: • Clear outstanding debt (urgently needed): Allowing it to focus on nurturing and growing coffee trees and continue to support community initiatives. • Expand its impact: Increase its production capacity, create more jobs, and further support local farmers. • Promote sustainable practices: Continue our commitment to organic farming, environmental protection, and community empowerment. • Expansion of Coffee Plantation: Cyesha Coffee aims to expand its current 75-hectare plantation to an impressive 400 hectares. This expansion will significantly increase production capacity, allowing the company to meet growing demand for its high-quality coffee beans while also generating more revenue to reinvest in its operations and community initiatives. • Rejuvenating Coffee Farms and Promoting Organic Practices: Recognizing the challenges faced by local farmers with aging coffee trees and the increasing demand for organic products, Cyesha Coffee plans to support farmers in rejuvenating their old coffee trees. This will involve providing training, resources, and access to high-quality seedlings to improve productivity and the quality of coffee produced in the region. Additionally, Cyesha Coffee will transition its own farming practices to organic methods, further enhancing the value and sustainability of its coffee. https://www.scribd.com/document/732047422/A-Business-Plan-for-Establishing-a-Factory-to-Make-Organic-Fertilizers-to-Support-in-Enhancing • Climate Change Adaptation Strategy: Climate change poses a significant threat to coffee production globally. To mitigate these risks, Cyesha Coffee will invest in developing and implementing a comprehensive climate change adaptation strategy. This will involve adopting climate-smart agricultural practices, such as water-efficient irrigation systems, shade management techniques, and soil conservation measures. By proactively addressing climate change, Cyesha Coffee aims to ensure the long-term resilience and sustainability of its operations and the broader coffee farming community. https://www.ctc-n.org/sites/default/files/2022-10/Creating%20pilot%20site%20for%20supporting%20coffee%20farmers%20to%20overcome%20the%20negative%20impac.pdf • Investing in technology and infrastructure: Implementing climate-smart agricultural practices and enhancing processing facilities will require investments in technology and infrastructure, such as irrigation systems, shade nets, and processing equipment. • Research and development: conducting research on climate-resilient coffee varieties and sustainable farming practices to enhance productivity and quality.
